Using Photoshop we can edit images, the changes we can make in an image involves :-
Image cropping
Changing background of an image
Changing the gradient
Transforming the image etc.

Creating A Batman Style Poster Using Less than 4 Photoshop Tools

Conclusion_1.jpg

I have tried to create an Odyssey poster similar in style to the Batman poster shown above.

FOLLOW THE TUTORIAL TO MAKE A POSTER USING MINIMUM PHOTOSHOP TOOLS

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I am using a portrait mode for the poster, the size is 2550x3500 pixels. After that fill the background layer with grey (#b0adad).

Step 2

Convert your logo into Vector image using Adobe Illustrator and place it in your canvas as shown below.
The difference between a normal and a vector image is that a normal bitmap image is made up of pixels but vector images are made by lines and curves giving them higher quality.

Step 3

To create this kind of a poster you require the right assets i.e the buildings, shatter images etc. The images used are displayed below.

Step 4

Start placing the buildings using the logo for reference of position and size.

""Simlarly Cover whole of the Canvas**

Step 5

Here we have covered all canvas.

Step 6

Now use the shatter images that I displayed in Step 3.
Just copy the shatter image and start placing it in your scene. You can resize and rotate them.

15608240307_92aac4b4e8_b.jpg

Step 7

In order to make the effect more realistic it's necessary to add some motion blur to these shatters.
So for every layer go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. Set the desired angle.
The blur tool blurs your image. When you click on the blur tool your cursor turns into a circle and it acts as a paint brush. You just paint over the part of the image you wish to blur.

15794955052_8b6eeaec98_b.jpg

Step 8

Here you have the scene with the shatters.

Step 9

Select all layers but the background and go to Layer>Group Layers. After that with the Magic Wand Tool (W) select the odyssey symbol. You can hide the odyssey symbol layer right after that.
Photoshop’s Magic Wand selects pixels based on tone and color. When we click on an area in the image with the tool, Photoshop looks at the tone and color of the area we clicked on and selects pixels that share the same color and brightness values. This makes the Magic Wand exceptional at selecting large areas of solid color.

15607555959_8670ab1074_b.jpg

Step 10

With the group selected go to Layer>Layer Mask>Hide Selection.
Now the buildiing and the shatters will be hidden on the area that the odyssey symbol was. It's too perfect,we want it to be a little rough. So in order to solve that let's use the Brush Tool (B).The brush tool would help in smoothening the edges therefore creating a perfect destruction effect.Use the brush presets option to select your desired brush.
The Brush tool is a basic painting tool. It works like a traditional drawing tool by applying the color using strokes. It's located in the standard Tool Bar and its default shortcut is the letter B.

15608530520_f7a056bc3f_b.jpg

Step 11

Add a layer on top of the others and then with the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft brush, start painting the edges of the canvas with black to create a vignette effect.
To save time use Picasa or any other image editing software and directly use vignette effect for the image.

15173926663_d992dbee88_b.jpg

Step 12

Time to fix the colour. There are a lot of ways to do it, to do it my way,go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. Change the Hue ,Saturation and Lightness as desired.I used 195, 8 and -7 respectively.

15607530109_b959225798_b.jpg

Step 13

Now go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Change the black, grey and white input. My input was 29 ,1,155 respectively.

15173384144_8b3c8b03fe_b.jpg

Step 14

In the end, you can add a spherical object to make it look more like the logo.I also added a few more shatter layers.

15169993673_957372e30e_b.jpg

This is how the final result looks like. It seems to be difficult but as you can see the steps are very easy to follow and execute.

Now we will create a scene in which a meteor hits a building and the building breaks

WE HAVE NO INTENTION TO HARM ANY BUILDING THIS IS ONLY FOR PROJECT PURPOSES AND WE HOPE THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO ANY BUILDING IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD

Meteor Hitting A Building

opt2.jpg

While creating the scene/image we will come across many tools which are the most important/useful tools in photoshop
We will proceed step wise explaining each tool and it's effect side by side

The final image we'll get will be something like this:-

So lets start :->

Step 1:(TURNING THE BUILDING)

-Open a photoshop application(here we are using CS 5) and then open an image of a building
-Now duplicate the layer(the building will be without a top in this layer)
-To remove the top we will use the clone stamp and the patch tool

**CLONE STAMP—IT TAKES A SAMPLE FROM THE IMAGE AND THEM COPIES THAT SAMPLE IN THE TARGET AREA,ie here we'll take a sample from the background clouds and apply them on the building top so that the top becomes invisible

1.jpg

PATCH TOOL—THE PATCH TOOL WORKS IN A SIMILAR WAY AS THE CLONE STAMP,IT ALSO SELECTS A SOURCE AND THEN IT REPLICATES IT ON THE DESTINATION,BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT 1) IN THE PATCH TOOL WE CAN SELECT THE SHAPE OF THE SOURCE AND THE DESTINATION OURSELVES AND 2) IT TAKES CARE OF THE EDGES IE IT MERGES THE SURROUNDING BACKGROUND WITH THE PATCH WE HAVE COPIED TO THE DESTINATION(FOR THIS WE NEED TO PRESS ctrl+H AFTER APPLYING THE PATCH)**

2.jpg

-Now the top is removed and we want top turn the top and then again crop it in the image, for that we will make another layer
-Go to the background layer and select the portion(top) that we removed,we need to hide and view the background layer and the layer above it in order to
select the exact part,to select a portion of an image we will use the following tools

**PEN TOOL—IT HELPS US TO MANUALLY SELECT A PORTION BY CREATING AND LINKING THE NODES WHICH WE CREATE OURSELVES,IT IS THE MOST ACCURATE TOOL TO SELECT A PORTION PROVIDED WE USE IT WITH MINIMUM ERROR(SINCE THE NODES ARE CREATED MANUALLY)

4.jpg

SELECTION TOOL—IT WORKS THE SAME WAY THE PEN TOOL WORKS BUT HERE INSTEAD OF CREATING NODES WE DRAG THE BOUNDARY OF A SELECTION TO SELECT A PORTION

MAGIC WAND—IT AUTOMATICALLY SELECTS A PORTION AT WHICH WE CLICK BY DETECTING THE DIFFERENCE IN TONES OF COLOR**

-After selecting the portion copy it in the new layer(3rd) place it in the correct position (by enabling view of all the layers first)and chose free transform in the edit toolbar, there change the rotation value to around 11-12 degrees depending on the required intensity of the impact

5.jpg

EDIT->FREE TRANSFORM->(CHANGE THE DEGREES OF ROTATION)

6.jpg
7.jpg

-After removing the top we want sone shatters scattered around the broken portion for that we will make use of the layer mask utility

LAYER MASK—IT ALLOWS US TO SELECT A LAYER AND CREATE A MASK OF IT ON THE LAYER BELOW ,IT IS USEFUL WHEN WE WANT TO SHOW SOME OF THE CONTENTS OF THE PREVIOUS LAYES IN THE CURRENT LAYER,THIS IS DONE BY APPLYING THE BLACK PAINT BRUSH ON THE MASKING LAYER AND TO REVERT BACK THE CHANGES WE USE A WHITE PAINT BRUSH

003.jpg

-So we can select a scattered black brush and then apply it on the masking layer in order to create some shatters

03.jpg

-Now the first step of turning the building is complete

Step 2:(METEOR STRIKE)

-To create a meteor strike we need to have an image of the meteor and an image of a fire in order to create the effect of a strike
-In a new tab of photoshop open the meteor image and the use the free transform tool as used above in order to get the size and the direction of the meteor correctly

10.jpg

-Now to change the color and the shape of the meteor we will use 2 tools the these 2 purposes
for the color part we will use the curves utility

**CURVE UTILITY—IT ALLOWS US TO CHANGE THE CONTRAST/BRIGHTNESS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE IMAGE:::we need this to create a red-black texture in the meteor to improve it's appearance

11.jpg

SMUDGE TOOL—IT WORKS IN A SIMILAR WAY AS THE BLUR TOOL WORKS BUT IT'S BETTER THAN THAT SINCE IT HELPS US TO MANUALLY SELECT A PORTION OF THE IMAGE AND THEN DRAG IT IN ORDER TO CREATE A BLUR EFFECT**

12.jpg

-We can also add a liquifying effect on the meteor's fire in order to make it look more impressive

LIQUIFY TOOL—FILTERS->LIQUIFY(A NEW WINDOW WILL OPEN WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO LIQUIFY EVERY PORTION IN THE SELECTED LAYER)

-Now open the fire image in another window and apply the same changes as we did in the meteor image depending on your requirements
-Finally we will merge these 3 images,ie select these images one by one and paste/drag them in the main tab(containing the main building) and place them according to the situation

13.jpg

whenever you copy an image to another image then another layer is created and we can modify the effect of the image merging by setting the blending mode:
IMAGE BLENDING—THIS UTILITY ALLOWS US TO MERGE 2 IMAGES BY CREATING DIFFERENT EFFECTS WHICH IS DONE BY SELECTING THE BLENDING MODE(here we are selecting the normal mode only)

-To create the smoke we will use the brush tool and change it's color from gray to red-grey as we approach the impact
-After this the image looks like this-

Step 3:(FINISHING TOUCHES)

-In order to create more shatters we can download available images an the paste it
-And finally we will change the gradient of the final image(making it a bit more dark, depending on the original image),it will be done by the gradient map tool

GRADIENT MAP TOOL-IT MAPS DIFFERENT TONES IN THE IMAGE TO DIFFERENT COLORS SET IN GRADIENT MAP,ADJUSTMENTS ARE DONE BY CHANGING THE % OPACITY AND %FILL COLOR

14.jpg

NOW THE IMAGE IS READY AND IT LOOKS LIKE THIS :->

15.jpg

WE'VE CREATED THE SAME SCENE WITH A DIFFERENT(RANDOM) BUILDING :->
